    Can Your iMac Take More Memory?

    It depends on the model. Many newer iMacs have memory soldered to the motherboard, and soldered memory can’t be upgraded. The diagnostic checks your model before we talk about a price.

    Memory Not Soldered

    Bring us your iMac and we’ll be able to find out how much memory your computer already has. Then we’ll ask you how you use your iMac, and we’ll recommend the exact amount of new memory that fits your model. You approve the price before we start.

    Memory Soldered

    We tell you at the diagnostic, so you don’t pay for an upgrade your iMac can’t take. If you are short on storage space rather than memory, ask about an iMac SSD upgrade.

    A rule of thumb: 27-inch Intel iMacs (2009–2020) have memory slots; 21.5-inch Intel iMacs from late 2012 on have slots behind the display, except the mid-2014 and late-2015 models, whose memory is soldered; Apple silicon iMacs (2021 and later) have memory built into the chip, so it can’t be upgraded. The diagnostic confirms your exact model.
